For a long time, you have suspected there was a difference between affording to buy a used exotic car and affording to own a used exotic car. Today, your suspicions will be confirmed. With fresh fuel economy figures, I decided that now would be as good a time as any to update you on exactly what it has cost to own this car for the last five months.
But before I do that, a few words about my trip. It was glorious. This is mainly due to the wonderful people of Charleston, dozens of whom introduced themselves to me at cars and coffee and graciously showed me their cars. So how is the Aston on the highway?
Nowhere near as bad as you might expect. The V8 Vantage is a sports car, with sports car handling, and a sports car stick shift, and a sports car two seats, and sports car sizing. But it is a good long-distance cruiser. The seats are comfortable, the ride is pleasant, the car is surprisingly quiet, and the cruise control, the stereo, and the air conditioning all worked flawlessly the whole trip.
On my 1,mile trip down to Charleston and back, the Aston burned through In highway driving alone, the car returned When I bought the car, it was still on its original clutch—a rarity for a year-old Vantage, and especially unusual for one that spent its whole life in a city, like mine, which lived nearly a decade in Washington, D. Surprisingly, the only reasonable cost of all this is insurance.
This is because insurance is the only cost that actually decreases as the car gets older. Everything else remains just as expensive as it was when the car was sold new. The A. Shop Subscribe. Read on. Subscribe To Our Newsletter.

HennyAM Original Poster 40 posts months. Hey all AM experts and fans. Removing Fuse; does it have any significant effect on the car besides making the roar louder? Jockman 17, posts months. You're Welcome. The biggest effect would be on you every time you smile when you start her up or accelerate.
Personally I would recommend getting it switchable. On the motorway at 80 mph you are at around 3, rpm in a V8V manual and it is nice to be able to switch back to quiet mode for cruising.
I don't like quiet If I want quiet I'd put on ear-mufflers. Here are some comments from someone found on the net: a. Pulling the fuse can lead to seizing of the solenoids in the muffler - it also causes the car to run rich on the lower rpm spectrum which isnt that bad but isnt good either. You shouldn't do it IMHO. NeilR 5, posts months. On the factory tour, we were given the b ks that removing the fuse could seize the valves, which would cause it to fail an MOT on noise and emissions.
Did point out mine had successfully been through 3 MOTs latest was last month with no problem.
If noise emissions ever becomes part of MOT regulations, then the F will simply fail. That's the loudest thing I've ever been in. And for the flap I think I'll put in the Fuse every 9 weeks, drive with it in for a few days, then remove it again.
Sounds like a good idea of "maintaining" the car? I have one final question. Does it use more petrol??? MichaelV8V posts months. Hey guys Was just out driving a little bit. It happened twice, so it makes me wonder if it happens with yours as well. I believe I heard "popping" like twice, on very low revs - Is this normal it gives off this noise like its some sort of harley davidson motorbike? And thanks for the answers It is truly more fun to drive it now low revs! This Version A.
This module will remember your chosen setting in magnetic core retained memory for years if required, even through battery disconnections, it will not change its setting until you press the alternate button on the remote fob. A Real Alternative to Fuse 22 Removal: Unlike just removing fuse 22 or 15 this module will leave the vacuum pump, actuator solenoid and both exhaust valves fully functional as each time a button on the remote fob is pressed they will still operate.
Your selected Loud or Quiet mode will then always be retained, regardless of re-starts or battery disconnection. The unit will not change mode again until you operate the button on the remote fob. OBDII P Codes on an Aston Martin DB9
Aston Martin V8 Vantage Experts. Find great deals from top-rated dealers TM Search. Related Models For Sale. Used Cars For Sale. While servicing your DB9 you might run into a situation where your dash display or OBDII reader shows you an error message in the form of a cryptic P code like P, setting the stage for an ominous visit to your local dealer and the commensurate drain on your bank account. Without any reference, your tendency might be to stick your head in the sand and just drive on risking damage to the car.
In this post I wanted to publish a list of all the P codes I could find so that it might help steer you in the right direction to taking care of the issue yourself. Some P codes are innocuous. For example, P [Exhaust muffler Bypass Control Circuit] is logged if you pull the famous Fuse 22 to uncork your exhaust.
If you find this code and you have pulled your fuse, you can just ignore it. The publication is a great resource, and has a tremendous amount of detail about each P Code, and other theory about the cars operation and diagnostics. The official place to get the P codes explained is on the Aston Martin Technical Information Website which I have covered in another blog post.
So, I would recommend that if you find the P code you are experiencing in the list below just check out the PDF. Or succumb, and take your car into the dealership. Here is a list of them explained:. I have them listed out here so that the Google search index can pick them up and guide you back here.

How much louder does it get? Where is the fuse box?
Which fuse is it? What does uncorking really do? Does it improve the gas mileage better? Does it make the car run richer at idle? The DB9 has a 2 stage exhaust. With the cork still in, the bypass is controlled by the computer to be normally closed between about and rpmand then automatically open when the engine is at higher RPMs allowing the engine to breath easier while its working hard. The bypass is open at startup, and then is closed automatically after the engine is started at low RPM.
The valve is actually operated by a vacuum diaphragm see videos below. With the engine off, there is no electrical signal and thus no vacuum. Hence, this is why you can hear the uncorked sound at startup. This explanation should dispel the myth that uncorking your car is bad for the vacuum pump and diaphragm. Presumably the worry here was that the reduced exhaust backpressure at low RPM will somehow mess with the air flow rates and fuel injection.
The engine uses a air mass flow sensor on the air intake to compute the exact amount of air entering the engine, and then adds the exact amount of fuel for that amount of air. Regardless of how freeflow the engine is running, the amount of fuel is always precisely calculated dynamically.
Is it bad for the car? I doubt it. Remove Fuse 22 from the Trunk boot fuse box. OK, everybody knows that, but where is the fuse exactly in the car? Let me know if you have info on this…]. You will be working on the Trunk Boot fuse box. You can refer to your owners manual for its location, but here is where it is:.
Here is what Fuse 22 looks like removed. Once you have removed Fuse 22, your car and dealer will be aware of it. Next time you or the dealer connect and OBDII reader to the car they will see the Pbut this is normal and not an issue.
Here is my video clip of accessing the fuse box and removing fuse Wearing a mechanic cam I needed my hands free so I apologize for the camera motion and positioning. I think it improves the sound at lower RPMs. It adds a bit of growl while you are driving around normally, but never an amount that will annoy the neighbors.
With the bypass closed, the idle sound level is about 69 decibels dB. With it open, the sound is closer to 72 dB. A little bit louder, but not straight pipes! Have a listen to the change. The sonorous roar coming from the back of a performance car as it straddles the upper registers of its RPM range is most of the reason people buy the damn things in the first place.
After the initial shock of driving a hand-built exotic around a metropolitan city wore off, I was left with one daunting and inexcusable issue: The race-inspired, dry-sump, 4. When the valve is open, the exhaust gases get a more direct and loud path to the outside. The infamous fuse 22 removal is a favorite amongst Aston owners, as it allows the driving experience to be enhanced significantly with no monetary commitment.
