And never let grease drip onto the burner or element.

I just got new pans to replace the old ones and after using the one burner twice the drip pan is starting to turn on the bottom side. I have been real careful to not use any higher than a medium high temperature since then, also tooke the drip pan out and washed it before it got used again. Have you tried using Easy Off Oven Cleaner?
Just spray some of it on a dampened cloth and place it on the area awhile and see if it will help. If you have pilot lights on, then do it like that otherwise, spray some on the area. You might try Barkeepers Friend or Zud.
Both of these will clean stains on stainless steel. Both are abrasive and may scratch however. If your stainless is brushed be sure and work with the grain and rub as little as possible. Contact Maytag as you should have a longer warranty. If it's over warranty contact the store you bought it at - or if the place is no longer around contact a local appliance store that is "friendly". Built-up grease and charred food accumulate and turn into carbon, causing a strong burning smell when cooking.
Letting your oven remain coated in carbon can eventually taint your food and even become a fire hazard. Consider using baking soda and vinegar to clean out your oven for a natural option, or use store-bought cleaners for a fast-acting method.
You could even use lemon juice and water for a quick way to clean moderately-dirty ovens. To clean your oven, first take out the oven racks and any other removable components like baking trays or pizza stones. Use a clean paintbrush or sponge to coat the inside of the oven with the paste, paying special attention to particularly caked or grimy areas.
Leave the paste on for at least 12 hours. In the meantime, clean the oven racks with hot soap and water and wipe down the exterior of the oven door with a damp dishcloth. After 12 hours, scrape off the dried paste and spray the interior of the oven with a mixture of vinegar and water.
